The evaluation scheme results in a groundwater vulnerability map identifying areas of high, medium and low vulnerability, as necessary for the measure-5 ment planning of the WFD. The evaluation scheme is based on the definition of the vulnerability of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It considers exposure, sensitivity and the adaptive capacity of the region. The adaptive capacity is evaluated in an actors' platform, which was constituted for the region in the PartizipA (" Participative modelling, Actor and Ecosystem Analysis in Regions with Intensive Agri-10 culture ") project. As a result of the vulnerability assessment, 21% of the catchment area was classified as being highly vulnerable, whereas 73% has medium vulnerability and 6% has low vulnerability. Thus, a groundwater vulnerability assessment approach is presented, which can be used in practice on a catchment scale for the WFD measurement planning.

Spatially explicit groundwater vulnerability assessment to support the implementation of the Water Framework Directive – a practical approach with stakeholders

The main objective of the study presented in this paper was to develop an evaluation scheme which is suitable for spatially explicit groundwater vulnerability assessment according to the Water Framework Directive (WFD). Study area was the Hase river catchment, an area of about 3 000 km2 in north-west Germany which is dominated by livestock farming, in particular pig and poultry production. For ...

Assessment of Saltwater Pollution in Azarshahr Plain Groundwater, Iran: Conjugating GALDIT Method and Geostatistics

Overutilization of groundwater resources can put their quality under stress. It could be base on rapid declination in groundwater level leading to salt water intrusion in the coastal aquifers. The objective of this study was to map the vulnerability of salt water intrusion of the Urmia Lake, Iran to nearby coastal aquifer (Azarshahr) using GALDIT method. The GALDIT index based on six parameters...

Evaluation of Groundwater Vulnerability Using Data Mining Technique in Hashtgerd Plain

Groundwater vulnerability assessment would be one of the effective informative methods to provide a basis for determining source of pollution. Vulnerability maps are employed as an important solution in order to handle entrance of pollution into the aquifers. A common way to develop groundwater vulnerability map is DRASTIC. Meanwhile, application of the method is not easy for any aquifer due to...

Identifying crop vulnerability to groundwater abstraction: modelling and expert knowledge in a GIS.

Water use is expected to increase and climate change scenarios indicate the need for more frequent water abstraction. Abstracting groundwater may have a detrimental effect on soil moisture availability for crop growth and yields. This work presents an elegant and robust method for identifying zones of crop vulnerability to abstraction. Archive groundwater level datasets were used to generate a ...
